Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my very first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day in my room, too afraid to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly state that I have made some of the finest friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advisable to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker sessions to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I assure you others are likely in the same situation. So, seek assistance. This might be one of the most vital lessons from the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. They are empathetic and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My main message is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has illustrated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
