Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be your largest concern. On my initial day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I have cultivated some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse population across the course and university, you are sure to discover those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you are bewildered by something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the hardships students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My main takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both leading up to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
