Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Entering into the unfamiliar was not an experience my typically shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be your top worry. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too nervous to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most enduring friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always wise to make an effort at the commencement of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a challenging environment may not always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are struggling as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want to see you thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I indeed took a leap at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is unquestionably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support being offered. You can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the plethora of support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
