In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most fearful elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with simple conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the course and the university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and content complexity. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a scenario can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most pivotal lesson to acquire in the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about embracing leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it’s indeed one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension, both before and throughout university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
