By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I realize I’ve experienced a year filled with significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the most formidable initial hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room all day, too afraid to go out and meet new people. However, I can now proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had during my time at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the onset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse community in the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some aspects, the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; observing others studying might lead you to feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me during this time, including the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something perplexes you, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They understand our struggles and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the available support. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the varied support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
