Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was poised to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Daring to step into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my lodging, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself to others. Today, though, I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous icebreaker opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people like you.

Another challenge was the workload and the level of content difficulty. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others also do not understand it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help you’re provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s illustrated how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
