Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most challenging hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too intimidated to go out and introduce myself to other students. Sitting here now, I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships of my life at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I conclude? I learned that it’s always preferable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embrace one thing, be yourself. There are such a diverse range of people throughout the program and university; you are bound to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always great for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost guarantee there are several others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Request help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students can struggle. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was coming to a close, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned at the beginning about taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. You can never have an excess of support!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the wide range of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
