Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student, it may top your concerns list. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, today I can definitely assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with simple conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I gain from this? I learned that it’s beneficial to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and the university, you are sure to find like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the assurance that everyone shares similar circumstances. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who don’t grasp it either. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish to see you thrive and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They resonate with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the support offered. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the diverse support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
