Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most significant obstacles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you find yourself reading this as a prospective student, it may top your list of worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I am proud to say that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that making an effort at the outset of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to meet those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to building confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial skill to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for guidance!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this element of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
