Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I found that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you connect with peers. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. Among the diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to find those who share your interests.
Another challenge involved managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable advancement from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A couple of factors assisted me during those moments, one being the reminder that we are all navigating the same circumstances. If you find something challenging, I can nearly assure you that others are in the identical situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to excel and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year about our concerns. I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did embrace one at the commencement of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
