**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the knowledge I’ve gained.
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the anxiety surrounding making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my initial day in student housing, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I chose to take a gamble and engage in light conversation with others who were feeling just as lost as I was. Eventually, these exchanges evolved into deep connections, and I discovered a second family at Imperial. What did I learn? That first step is truly worthwhile. Even if you’re not immediately ready, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and occasions to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic rigors of university posed a significant challenge as well. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was clear, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when confronted with tough material, especially when it appears that everyone else has it under control.
What aided me was the realization that I wasn’t the only one—everyone was facing similar obstacles. If something doesn’t make sense, the likelihood is that others are grappling with it too. The key is to seek assistance. Whether you reach out to classmates or request help from staff, asking for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered guidance whenever we sought it.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It facilitated my connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even during the academic year—was frequently unfounded. With the wide range of support from both staff and peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also finding time for joy and leisure, and I’ve matured in ways I never anticipated.
As I contemplate my first year, I’m thankful for the challenges faced, the friendships forged, and the opportunities for development. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: take that leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and trust that you will find your niche.
