Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize it as a period abundant with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was the task of making friends. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with a bit of small talk with others facing similar situations. So, what insight have I gained? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the academic year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one principle, let it be to be yourself. With so many diverse individuals within the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me in overcoming this feeling was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most critical skill to cultivate during your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke previously about taking leaps – at the start of the year, I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the support that is available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
