Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not what my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of fun! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This undoubtedly represents one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, feeling too anxious to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is always the wisest choice. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, no worries! There will be abundant opportunities and events to encourage interaction with others. I also discovered that above all, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge I confronted was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment is not always a boost for your confidence; seeing others study might lead to feelings of inadequacy. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may represent the single most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Seek guidance from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is definitely one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to utilize the support offered to you. You can never receive too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the multitude of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressful factors like exams and deadlines.
