By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I commenced my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This can feel daunting when beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a prominent worry. On my first day of settling into my dorm, I remained in my room the whole day, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. The takeaway? It’s beneficial to make a bold move at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared, no worries! There are numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to help you connect. Just be yourself, and you’ll encounter others like you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. Transitioning from A-levels was a significant leap, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. This atmosphere can test your confidence, and you might feel out of place compared to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, others probably are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is vital in your first year. Look for help from classmates and lecturers!

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They are sympathetic and maintain dialogue concerning student matters. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff, an invaluable experience. There are many ways to engage with faculty, and it ranks among the best actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support available; you can never have an excess of help!

This year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with the support of staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and discovered how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
