Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On the initial day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room throughout the day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with peers in comparable circumstances. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking an initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also found that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and even more from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others working hard and feel insufficient. Several factors assisted me during this period, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If something doesn’t make sense, it’s likely that others are confused as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding any difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance that is available. You can never have too much of it!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
