Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved persona was used to. Now, in reflection, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, this may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that it’s always advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be your genuine self. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those like you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the challenge of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in navigating that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you there are others who also struggle. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
