Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t an experience my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and meet people. Sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it only required engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always best to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re certain to encounter people like yourself.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also find it puzzling. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s definitely one of the most beneficial things you can do for your own sake! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
