Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, afraid, and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room because I was too scared to go out and meet people. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always wise. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. There are an array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Some factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who also don’t understand. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this phase of university is to leverage the assistance that is available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated, and it has also shown me how to enjoy myself amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
