Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect is often regarded as one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may rank among your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that making the first move at the year’s start is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With a diverse array of people in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a demanding setting can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the assurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are struggling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to hone in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter hurdles. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it is among the best things you can do for yourself! My principal lesson regarding this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the multitude of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
