Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging facets of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it could be one of your main concerns. On the first day of moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too nervous to go out and meet others. Yet, reflecting on this moment today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take bold steps at the start of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you’re going to be anything, let it be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to come across like-minded people.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who share the same confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They connect with students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the advisory support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking proactive steps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be eased through the extensive support systems provided by the staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
