Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was making connections. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of settling into my residence, a few days prior to the semester beginning, I spent the whole day indoors, feeling too nervous to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of my closest friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did this teach me? I discovered that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that staying authentic is vital. Among the diverse individuals across the program and university, you’ll undoubtedly find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic load and complexity of the content. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel less capable than your peers. What assisted me was the awareness that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, chances are, others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for support!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show compassion and keep lines of communication open regarding our issues. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking steps forward – I took one by becoming a year wellness representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

All in all, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
