Back in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is without a doubt one of the more frightening ones, and if you find yourself reading this as a future student, it might be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some wonderful friends here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t quite prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you meet new people. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. With the plethora of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to find those who align with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Look for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand that students may encounter difficulties. They relate to us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to balance enjoyment alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
