Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, worry, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the task of making connections. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and for prospective students, it might be one of your main worries. On my first day of moving into my new home, just days prior to the start of classes, I ended up spending the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. In contrast, I can now assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships during my time here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to engaging in small conversations with others facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking initial risks at the commencement of the year is always advantageous. If you find yourself feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events will present opportunities for you to connect with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a wide array of individuals present in the course and university, you’ll encounter those who truly resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intense workload and the challenging nature of the material. The transition from A-levels was noticeably steep, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more significant. Thriving in such an environment can undermine your confidence; observing others studying may leave you feeling less capable. A helpful reminder for me was that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is puzzling you, it’s almost certain that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty members in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep in touch with us throughout the academic year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Speaking of taking risks – I also took a leap by serving as a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to establish connections with staff, and this is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the help that’s available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illustrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and has taught me to find joy in my experiences despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
