Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping straight into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was ready for. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I currently stand?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome parts of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be a significant concern for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I kept myself confined to my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students. Yet, as I sit here now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this? I discovered that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another challenge I had to face was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If there’s something you can’t grasp, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are also finding it difficult. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year: request help from your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students often face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role facilitated my acquaintance with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous paths to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this university experience is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!
In a broader sense, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
