Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about my prospects as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and pleasure. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often a significant worry for incoming university students. On my initial day settling into housing, I spent the entire time in my room, too daunted to interact with others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with light conversations with others in alike situations. I discovered that taking the plunge at the start of the year is advantageous. If you’re hesitant, there are numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect. Be authentic, and you’ll discover individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a considerable leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. It can be challenging to your self-esteem, but keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are too. Seeking assistance is vital during the first year, from classmates and faculty alike.

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They engage with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I delayed utilizing the pastoral support until later, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with faculty. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much!

This year revealed to me that anxious feelings about university are frequently misplaced and can be diminished with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. It showed me that I am never isolated and how to find joy despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
