Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving headfirst into this new environment was unfamiliar territory for my formerly shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is surely one of the more daunting aspects of entering university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day moving into housing, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take that first step at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With the wide array of individuals across the program and campus, you’re bound to encounter those with similar interests.

Another hurdle I confronted was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone shares your circumstances. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who feel the same way. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to learn in your initial year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s unequivocally one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much help!

Overall, this year has enlightened me to the fact that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
