Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and withdrawn self had dealt with before. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals going through similar experiences. So, what did I grasp? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discerned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the challenges of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can impact your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experiences. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university is to seize the help available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
