Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking such a significant step was not something my former shy self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what have I discovered, and what is my current state?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student, it might pose a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just before classes started, I remained in my room the whole day, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I found that taking a plunge at the outset of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who vibe with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your confidence; you might witness peers studying and question your own capabilities. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find something challenging, chances are, others are too. So, seek assistance. This perhaps stands as the most crucial lesson from the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They desire your success and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary lesson is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never in solitude and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
