Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year given me, and where am I today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet people. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was definitely an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being thrown into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the hurdles that students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain ongoing communication throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I previously mentioned about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
