Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty concerning my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not exactly something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

A significant initial hurdle was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Thankfully, I can now assert that I have made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned from this? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, I learned that authenticity is vital. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re guaranteed to find those who share your interests.

Another obstacle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students endure. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication concerning our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral care until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking bold steps – I took one by becoming a wellness representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to build rapport with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
