Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I view it as a time of personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may be among your top worries. On the initial day of moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had in this university and program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can be one thing, it should be yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inferior. A few things assisted me in managing that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you there are others feeling the same way. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and sustain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the abundant support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to have fun amidst stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
