Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey towards a degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was socializing. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be a primary concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. However, today, I can confidently claim that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I come to understand? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and inherent difficulties of the content. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such an environment can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. Therefore, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek support from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support offered. You can never have too much assistance!

Overall, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never on my own and taught me how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
