By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path marked by personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! What have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
A significant initial challenge was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it could be a primary worry. On my first day of moving into my residence a few days before classes commenced, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I have established a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I grasp? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. Moreover, if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a variety of individuals across the program and campus, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in that atmosphere can be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What benefitted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, others probably are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They are compassionate and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding any difficulties. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had earlier. At the year’s start, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased by the diverse support systems available from staff and fellow students. I have realized that I am never alone and how to have fun, despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
