Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening facets of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On the inaugural day of moving into my housing, just days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the entire day concealing myself in my room, far too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this institution and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I realized? I discovered that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s genuine. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals like yourself.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me conquer that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely want you to triumph and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with learners and maintain ongoing communication with us all year concerning our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. Numerous opportunities exist to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best initiatives you can pursue for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the aid you’re offered. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illuminated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the abundant support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
