Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is undoubtedly one of the more daunting concerns for new students. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Nevertheless, I can now confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or hesitant, there’s no need for concern! Numerous icebreaker events and opportunities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you could embody one quality, let it be authenticity. Surrounded by diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; observing others study may induce feelings of comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the awareness that everyone faces similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can virtually assure you that others are experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, seeking assistance is crucial. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both peers and faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to our experiences and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to build relationships with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this part of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support systems offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
