Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be among your leading worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. As I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, fret not! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those like you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students may face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the abundant support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
