By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Approaching the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, difficulties, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your prime worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Nonetheless, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required some casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s beneficial to take a leap at the year’s commencement. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also understood that if you can be one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek guidance from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s truly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support avenues accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
