Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was far from what my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current stance?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it could be among your major worries. On the inaugural day of settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to make a move at the start of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, embody authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me combat that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and realize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep constant lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking risks at the beginning; I took one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the abundant support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment while navigating stressors like exams and deadlines.
