Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most fearsome hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university can be quite daunting, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with classmates in similar situations. What did I realize? I learned that it’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find your kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was managing the demands of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-level studies, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can shake your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and instructors!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t make the most of the support services until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance that’s available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
