Conceived by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the most significant and intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the scariest parts of beginning college, and if you are an incoming student, it may be your top concern. On my first day moving into my accommodation, several days before classes started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to go out and introduce myself to others. Now, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to connect with others like yourself.

Another challenge was the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be a test for your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few strategies aided me through those sentiments, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost promise there are others who also find it perplexing. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your initial year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had leveraged it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the help that is extended to you. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are almost invariably unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
