Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too apprehensive to go out and socialize. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who click with you.
An additional difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can severely impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me through that sensation was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others feel the same. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the available help. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the extensive support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun in parallel with stressors like exams and deadlines.
