Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet anyone. However, I can now affirmatively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated through light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of people across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; witnessing others study may leave you feeling insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate these feelings, including the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a topic, I can almost assure you that others are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most worthwhile things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this university experience is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be relieved through the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
