Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I observe a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too shy to step outside and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found out that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet others like yourself.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t grasp it either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking chances at the beginning—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
