Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a concern for you. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just prior to the semester starting, I remained in my room the entire day, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate your connections with others. I also realized that being genuine is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to meet those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge involved the level of workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can significantly impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was recalling that everyone shares this experience. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us concerning our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking chances – I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to bond with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the resources available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the diverse support systems provided by faculty and peers. It has taught me that I’m never on my own and how to find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
