Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I got ready to embark on my first year pursuing Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, immersing myself in university life felt like a formidable challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming connections with others. If you’re a future student perusing this, you may share that same sense of apprehension. I recall spending my initial day in student housing secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But fast-forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life—individuals who feel like a second family. What changed? I took gradual steps: engaging in light conversations with fellow students, participating in social gatherings, and simply being my authentic self. This is one of the key lessons I’ve learned—embrace your true self. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to discover others who align with your interests and principles.
Another substantial shift was the demands of academia. The transition from A-level studies to university-level material was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to be overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when you witness others seemingly excelling. However, here’s the reality: everyone struggles at some point. If something confuses you, chances are your peers are struggling too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
On the subject of support, I can’t commend the Materials department staff enough. They truly care about our success and well-being. They recognize the challenges faced by students and keep the lines of communication open throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my class. This position allowed me to connect with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the available support systems. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My takeaway? Take advantage of the assistance provide—you can never have too much support.
In summary, this year has shown me that the fears and apprehensions I harbored before starting university were mostly baseless. With the backing of faculty and fellow students, those feelings became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that it is feasible to relish university life—even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
