Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about the path ahead as I commenced my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not a familiar experience for my previously introverted self. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a transformation filled with personal development, obstacles, and pleasures. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This tends to be one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to step out and interact with others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with simple conversations with those in similar predicaments. What did I discover? Taking a risk at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be there to facilitate connections with others. Moreover, if you can embody anything, embrace your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is confusing to you, it’s likely perplexing to others as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and staff!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the challenges students endure. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I spoke about taking risks – I ventured into becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to enjoy myself in spite of the stress stemming from exams and deadlines.
