**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was preparing to start my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted nature was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I can’t help but consider what this year has taught me and where I am now.

### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this can be one of the most frightening parts of beginning university—and I was no different. On my first day moving into my new place, just days before classes started, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted by the thought of stepping outside and introducing myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I have discovered a second family, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.

So, what did I discover? Taking that initial leap at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t despair—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most significantly, I learned to just be myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. Being in such a demanding academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you notice others studying diligently and feel like you’re lagging. However, one realization that helped me persevere was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too.

My top piece of advice? Do not hesitate to seek assistance. Developing this skill in your first year is perhaps the most vital. Whether reaching out to your classmates or seeking advice from faculty, asking for help can be transformative.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Regarding staff support, the help from the Materials department has been exceptional. The instructors and tutors truly want their students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing guidance. While I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s start, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly improve your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Lessons Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often baseless. With various support resources at hand—both from faculty and fellow students—there’s always a way to face challenges. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with coping with the unavoidable stresses of exams and assignments.

Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, and I’m eager for the journey that lies ahead at Imperial.
