**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was a formidable challenge. Now, as I contemplate the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I gained from this experience, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might share similar feelings—it’s completely normal to be anxious about meeting new individuals. On my first day in my residence, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.

Jump to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever known. My companions here have become like a second family, and all it required was for me to step beyond my comfort level and initiate casual conversations with others who were just as inexperienced as I was.

So, what was the lesson learned? Taking that first bold step is always worthwhile. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease right away, don’t despair—there will be myriad icebreaker activities and events to aid you in connecting with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With the vast diversity within the Imperial community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to succumb to feelings of being overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving individuals.

What facilitated my navigation through this was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most critical skill one can hone during their first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials Science department have been amazing. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Embracing the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I undertook at the beginning of the year. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and taking advantage of these can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available to you—you can never have enough assistance.

### Reflections on My Journey

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With a wealth of support options available, ranging from staff to peers, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to navigate the stress of examinations and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my initial year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, connection, and self-discovery. If you’re on the brink of beginning your own university journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous—but also recognize that you will find your place, forge meaningful relationships, and excel in ways you never expected.
