**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, diving headfirst into this new phase was a formidable challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of forging friendships. If you’re an upcoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can state with assurance that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered—both within my program and throughout the university—have become a second family to me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as nervous.

So, what’s the takeaway? Taking that bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not—plenty of icebreaker gatherings and chances to engage with fellow students will arise. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of peers at university, you’re guaranteed to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your competence when observing others studying and wondering if you’re lagging behind.

What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are, too. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support

On the topic of support, I can’t stress enough how amazing the staff in the Materials department are. They truly care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were always eager to address any issues.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. Early on, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to engage closely with the staff. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Utilize the support provided to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced before university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This past year has equipped me to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and personal growth.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll evolve in ways you never expected, and you’ll emerge more resilient on the other side.
