**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and ambiguity about the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Looking back now, I see an academic year that was not only demanding but also life-changing, marked by personal development, fresh experiences, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be a significant worry for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who resemble a second family.
How did I arrive at this point? By taking that initial step of courage. Engaging in conversations with others in similar situations—through casual chats or icebreaker gatherings—was crucial. I discovered that being genuine is the most effective strategy; given the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people with shared interests and values. So, if you’re feeling reluctant, bear in mind that there will be numerous chances to engage with others, and you can proceed at a pace that suits you.
### Adapting to the Academic Load
Another hurdle I encountered was the significant increase in workload and complexity compared to A-levels. The shift from the first to the second term proved particularly challenging, and maintaining confidence wasn’t always straightforward. It’s typical to experience moments of feeling overwhelmed, especially when observing others studying and fearing you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too.
The pivotal lesson I took away was the importance of seeking assistance. Don’t hesitate to connect with your classmates or teaching staff. Collaboration and seeking help are crucial skills to hone in your first year—and they will benefit you throughout your academic path.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The lecturers and support staff genuinely wish to see students thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing our worries and offering advice.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This experience was priceless, and I urge others to seize similar chances. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and support staff can have a tremendous impact. Remember, it’s impossible to receive too much help—make the most of the resources available to you!
### Major Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often misplaced. The support systems available, from both staff and fellow students, are more than sufficient to guide you through any obstacles. I’ve understood that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to navigate academic pressures like exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and relaxation.
This year has been a journey of development, perseverance, and connection. To anyone getting ready for university, my message is straightforward: take those courageous steps, welcome the support around you, and don’t forget to relish the journey.
